Jan Mayor - Chief Executive Officer

A childs drawing of JanJan started out working in the mental health field including behavioural work with violent offenders. She has worked with people with learning disabilities and has been delivering experiential training for over twenty years. she has worked in the drug and alcohol field since 1991, which has included being a practitioner in various roles and managing a wide range of sevices (Apart from one year doing something completely different - organisational development in the educational world). Jan has a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, a Post Graduate certificate in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies... and has done lots of other courses (she'll tell you if you ask!) in training, education, management, therapeutic approaches and moral philosophy!

What do you do? Bit of everything really; my main role is making sure DrugTrain runs smoothly and that the staff here enjoy themselves at the same time as delivering a service that does some good out there in the real world. I do the business planning and boring money type stuff. I do a lot of the research and development work. I still design courses and events and I deliver training too. In delivery I take particular interest in what motivates behaviour and how it can be changed. This includes managers, facilitating events to make teams/systems/organisations work better and transforming approaches to dual diagnosis.

What is the best thing about your job? Watching the 'light bulb' go on as people on our courses learn something for themselves, meeting lots of interesting people, learning all the time, the opportunity to be creative, working with a fun, creative and supportive team. Knowing that we enjoy what we do, other people enjoy it and overall it has a positive impact on disadvantaged people.

And the hardest? Business planning, cash flow forecasts and cycling home from the office (there is this one particular hill...)

What makes you really happy? Being completely absorbed in the design stage of a new course, its like doing a really fascinating puzzle to fit all the pieces together. Riding my bicycle, especially with a tent on the back for touring, but also to the office. Walking with my dog.

And what makes you angry? Injustice, hypocrisy, the suffering caused by the unintended consequences of ill thought out but well meaning policies and decisions.

What are you most proud of in your career so far? The people we have trained who go on to use that training to make the world a slightly better place. Putting together the current staff team of DrugTrain - they are awesome to work with.

Which 5 people would you invite round for supper? Socrates, Evo Morales, Stephen Fry, Eddy Merckx and Dawn French.
